Nathaniel George Toms was the son of William and Sarah Toms (nee Wensley). He was born in Wickwar in about October 1892. He was brother to William, Sidney, Lily, Percy, Alec, Annie, Denys and Edith. William and Denys died in infancy, there was another sibling that cannot be identified since they do not appear on any census. The family lived at Hart House, High Street, Wickwar. Nathaniel was working as an apprentice wheelwright carpenter in 1911. His father was a blacksmith, as was his father before him and he was born in Devon
Nathaniel married Emma Louisa Griffin on 8 May 1915 in Gloucester. She remarried in 1920 and became Emma Hill
Nathaniel enlisted in Bristol and joined the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards as a guardsman, he was later promoted to Lance Corporal. He was Killed in Action at the Battle of Loos in Flanders in October 1915 at the age of 23. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, Victory and British War medals
Nathaniel George Toms is remembered on the Loos Memorial in France. He is also remembered on the Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial, the Wickwar Village Hall Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Wickwar
