Peter was born in Kilhile, Wexford, Ireland. On the 1911 census, he had an elder sister and younger brother. At the time of the 1939 register Peter was living in Unity Street, Kingswood (sharing a house with a Margaret Sheppard). His year of birth varies in the later records, but the date and month are consistent. The CWGC gives his parents address as Rathcoole, Co. Dublin, Republic of Ireland.
Peter enlisted in the Royal Navy and on the 23rd of October 1943 he was serving on HMS Charybdis (A Dido-class cruiser). During Operation Tunnel where the English Channel meets the Atlantic, the ship was attacked by several German torpedo boats and sunk with a heavy loss of life
