On the day of his death, Philip was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant the S.S. "Southborough" (Sydney, N.S.W.) which was part of a convoy and on route from La Goulette in Tunisia to Teesport carrying a cargo of iron ore. At 1.43 p.m., 4-5 miles from Ravenscar, the vessel was torpedoed by U-boat UB-110 and hit on the starboard side of the forward bunker. It sank almost at once and 30 of the crew including the Master and Philip were lost. The eight survivors were picked up by an escort vessel and landed at Middlesbrough.
