Roger was promoted to Major in 1914 and joined the British Expeditionary Force in France at the beginning of 1915, when he was made Acting Lieutenant Colonel. He fought in the Battle of St Eloi and the Second Battle of Ypres. On the 13th October 1915, Roger was wounded during The Third Battle of Artois (25 September – 4 November 1915). The outcome of the battle was inconclusive and resulted in 110,000 allied casualties. Roger died of his wounds on the same day.
