Mark served in the 225 Battalion 57 (1/5th Battalion The East Surrey Regiment), Anti Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.

Mark married Edna May Golding in Kingswood in 1937. He was sent out to France with the British Expeditionary Force. After bitter fighting, massive casualties and its subsequent failure, following the capitulation of the Belgians, the East Surreys along with the remaining BEF retreated to Dunkirk in operation Dynamo. Mark who was initially reported as missing, died on the second day of Operation Dynamo”.
