Robert was the son of a butcher.

Robert served with the Royal Army Service Corps attached to 196 Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps. On the 15th February 1942 in the Fall of Singapore Robert was captured by the Japanese. He was held in Malai POW camp Singapore then transferred to 12 kilo POW camp in Thailand to work as a slave on the notorious Thai-Burma Railway. In June of 1945 just short of his 25th birthday, he reportedly died from hypertension. Robert was imprisoned for over 3 years, dying only 3 months before the end of hostilities.
