Further information:

Samuel was born in Kingswood, the son of a labourer and the eldest of three brothers.

Samuel initially enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment and later transferred to the 2nd/4th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. He was most probably killed in action in the course of day-to-day trench warfare typical of this part of the line. The Ploegsteert Memorial where Samuel is remembered, commemorates more than 11,000 servicemen of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in this sector during the First World War and have no known grave.
