Stanley was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and the eldest of three children with a younger sister and younger brother. In 1911 he was working with his father in the boot industry.
Stanley was called up in October 1915 for service during the hostilities. He was described as 5’ 5½“ tall with fair hair and blue eyes and the “Defence” was his third ship which he joined in March 1916. Stanley was killed in action aboard HMS defence whilst fighting against the German Fleet in the North Sea in The Battle of Jutland (31st May -1st June 1916). The ship blew up whilst under heavy fire from the German battleship "Friedrich Der Grosse". All of the increased war time complement of 904 crew members including Stanley were lost.
