Further information:

Stanley was born in Kingswood, a middle child of 15 children with two brothers and 12 sisters. He attended Kingswood Boys School and in 1911 he was working as a draper's warehouse man whilst most of his sisters were working in corset manufacturing. Stanley married Olive Maud Pascoe Parker a drapery assistant and the following year they had a daughter Irene Marjorie who was christened in August 1917, the same month that Stanley died.

Stanley enlisted in 1914 and mobilised to France in July 1915 where he fought in various actions on the Western Front including The Battles of The Somme and The German Retreat to The Hindenburg Line. Stanley served with the 7th Battalion, (Prince Albert's) Somerset Light Infantry and died from wounds received in the Battle of Passchendaele (the third battle of Ypres) which lasted from 31st July to 10th November 1917 and resulted in combined casualties estimated to be around 800,000 for both allies and Germans. Several Casualty Clearing Stations were posted at Dozinghem, where Stanley would have been taken after being wounded and the military cemetery where he is buried was used by them until early in 1918.
