Further information:

Stanley was born in Hanham, the only child of a single parent. In 1901 he and his mother, who was working as a boot machinist, were living with his mother's uncle and aunt. Ten years later Stanley was working in the boot industry along with his mother, and the pair of them were living by themselves.

Stanley served with the 2nd/4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.

Stanley died during the Battle of Cambrai (20th November - 6th December 1917). This offensive was the first time that the British had ever used tanks for a surprise attack without prior artillery bombardment. Initial allied gains were followed by an effective German counter attack and although the battle resulted in a victory for the allies, 44,000 British casualties and 179 tanks were lost.
