Further information:
Samuel was born in Siston the son of a navvy and the middle child of five with two brothers and two sisters. Samuel's father deserted the family in 1902 when Samuel was 10 years old and the family became "chargeable to the union”. The authorities eventually caught up with his father but not until 1915. One of Samuel's brothers also served in the Army during the war, and another in the Navy. They both survived the war but 3 cousins who were brothers from Warmley were not so lucky.
Samuel served with the 1st Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. Samuel's battalion was mobilised to France in August 1914 where they fought in a number of major actions including Battles of the Somme and Battles of Ypres. Samuel was killed in action, most probably in a minor action in support of the Third Battle of Ypres which began 4 days after his death. The cemetery where he was buried, was located in a field adjacent to a dressing station not far from Ypres.
