Walter was born in St. George in Bristol, the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of four with one brother and two sisters.
Walter’s regiment (the 7th Battalion, Glosters) moved to Mesopotamia in February 1916 and engaged in various battles including The Battle of Kut Al Imara. Walter died of wounds received during The Battles of the Hai salient, Dahra Bend and the Shumran Peninsula (11 January – 24 February 1917) which ended with a decisive defeat of the Turks. Amara, where Walter is buried, was the site of seven military general hospitals in 1917.
