William was born in Staple Hill, the eldest child and only son of a general labourer. William had one sibling, a younger sister Daisy May who died in 1909 at the age of 10.
William died of wounds on the first day of the Battle of Cambrai (8–10 October 1918) which was part of the Hundred Days Offensive. He was one of 12,000 casualties from this action, which was an allied victory. The cemetery where he is buried was used by the 29th and 46th Casualty Clearing Stations.
