William was born in Kingswood, the son of a shoemaker. He married Olive Long in May 1892 and in 1901 was living in Northampton with his wife and two daughters Winifred and Florence born 1893 and 1900 respectively. William enlisted in the army in Northampton in 1914, initially in the Northamptonshire Regiment (No 17264) later transferring to the South Wales Borderers, "A" Company, 4th Battalion and undertook active service on the Western Front. Sometime during the next two years he was discharged from the army and the family moved back to Kingswood. William died from carcinoma of the stomach at the end of 1916 and his death was registered in Bristol.
