William was born in Kingswood the second eldest of eight children with four sisters and three brothers. Both of his parents worked as boot finishers.
William’s served with the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, his battalion mobilised to France in August 1914 and took part in various actions on the Western Front including the Final Advance in Picardy and William was killed in action on the day of the Battle of the Sambre, the last major engagement of the war. The battle itself was a decisive allied victory and the war ended seven days later.
