William Henry Selwood was born in about 1887 in Hawkesbury. His parents were Henry Haywood Selwood and Sarah Jane Selwood (nee Roberts). His siblings were Reginald, Lizzie and the twins Reuben and Rufus. The twins died in infancy

William was working as a colliery hewer and living in Blainllechaw in Glamorgan in 1911. His widowed mother was living in the High Street in Wickwar in 1911 and she worked as a laundress

William enlisted in Ferndale in Glamorgan. He joined the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry as a private. He died in May 1915 at the age of about 28. William is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium

William Henry Selwood is also commemorated on the Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial, the Wickwar Village Hall Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Wickwar

He was awarded the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals
