Walter was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and the youngest of six children with four sisters and a brother. His mother died when he was aged 9 years.
Walter served in a training reserve battalion on the Home Front and died in the Military Hospital in Ipswich but the cause of his death is not known. His older brother Ernest died the previous year in the service of his country.
