Wilfred (mainly known as Oliver) was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of five with two brothers and two sisters. He married Helen Estrilde Hunt in November 1915 just four months before he died.
Wilfred enlisted in 1915 in the same month as his marriage, and was recorded as being 5'8 ¾ " tall. He served on the Home Front in the RAMC and died at Sutton Veny military hospital near Warminster, of a cerebral embolism and influenza after only 131 days of service.
