William was the son of a council worker.

Throughout the war, the 4th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry served with the 129th Brigade, alongside the 4th and 5th Wiltshire Regiment as part of the 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division, and spent most of its time in the UK in Kent up until the Normandy landings in 1944. William’s death was registered in Dover, therefore he died on active service but the cause of his death is not specified.
