page contents

Use bullet points (rather than numbers for the page contents – you can change this in the toolbar).

paragraphs

Break up paragraphs into manageable chunks with headings and bullet lists. This helps users scan more easily.

parish council

Both words should be lower case unless using the full name of the council. If writing town and parish council, town should go first.

phone numbers

Use ‘phone’ rather than ‘telephone’. Make sure the number is linked. For example, in the link box add tel:01454868000 with no spaces.

photos

Only use a photo when it has a purpose. For example, Report a problem with a drain which shows users the type of drain we are referring to.

Do not use on pages for decorative purposes, unless it is a hub page, for example, Help with the rising cost of living.

plain English

Always use Plain English. The list on GOV.UK gives an example of words to avoid.

please

We usually do not need to say ‘please’. It does not add to the meaning of a sentence and can make instructions seem optional when they are not intended to be.

police

Lower case, even when referring to ‘the police’.

posts

The maximum number of posts (tiles or boxes showing) under the category is generally 12.

privacy notice

Lower case.
