Councillor Katie Cooper has been named as the new Chair of South Gloucestershire Council after being elected by fellow councillors at the meeting of Full Council on 21 May.
Councillor Cooper moves into the role after serving as Vice Chair last year, with councillor Adrian Rush elected as Vice Chair this year.
The Chair and Vice Chair perform important ambassadorial roles, including representing the council at civic functions and chairing council meetings.
Each year, the new Chair selects a charity to support for the year ahead, with donations received during that time presented at the end of the Chair’s term of office.
Chair of the Council, councillor Katie Cooper, said: “I’m deeply honoured to be elected as Chair of South Gloucestershire Council and I’m proud to be able represent the council throughout the year. I look forward to working with residents, community groups and fellow councillors to celebrate the incredible work happening across our area.
“I’m also pleased to announce that my chosen charity for the year will be Ignite Life, whose work supporting young people and families to overcome adversity makes a meaningful difference to the lives of people in South Gloucestershire. I hope to raise both awareness and funds to support their important work.”
Outgoing Chair, councillor Franklin Owusu-Antwi presented a cheque for £11,010 to a representative from the chosen charity for his term in office, Gympanzees. The funding raised will support children and young people with disabilities to keep active by providing accessible play, exercise and social facilities.
Councillor Owusu-Antwi, said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as Chair of this Council; I am filled with both a deep sense of gratitude and quiet pride in all that we have achieved together. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside passionate, knowledgeable, and community-driven individuals and I thank my fellow councillors, officers and community members for your partnership and trust.
“To the incoming Chair, councillor Katie Cooper, I offer my congratulations and full support. The council is in capable hands, and I know you will lead with integrity and purpose. I also want to express my sincere thanks to everyone who supported me to raise funds for my chosen charity, Gympanzees.”
