Adoption West is inviting members of the community to explore the life-changing world of adoption at its Adoption Open Day on 29 November at St Michael’s Centre, North Road, Stoke Gifford BS34 8PD. From 10am until 1pm.

The event is a friendly, pressure-free space for anyone curious about adoption, whether you’re just starting to think about it or already considering taking the next step. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet experienced social workers, hear from adoptive parents, and learn more about the children who are waiting for loving, permanent homes across the region.

This year’s National Adoption Week (20–26 October, nationally led by You Can Adopt and Adoption England) focuses on the concept of ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ by tackling common misconceptions about adoption. Research shows that 86 per cent of prospective adopters worry they need a ‘perfect home’ before adopting, yet many adoptive families live in rented homes, small houses, or without a garden. Children who are waiting to be adopted don’t need perfection; they need a ‘welcome home’.

“We know that adoption can feel scary and confusing, especially with worries about being ‘ready’ or having the ‘ideal’ home,” says Alison Lewis (Service Director for Adoption West). “Home is about the people, being understood, supported, a place for fun, laughter, and tears. If you think you have this emotional space in your life for a child who is waiting for this opportunity, please get in touch. We will guide you through the process. Importantly, we aim to make sure there will be support in place for all families from first meetings to adulthood.”

National insights from adoption agencies show a worrying decline in adoption interest, with 12 per cent fewer families registering to adopt compared to last year, leaving 2,940 children in need of adoption nationwide. Within the Adoption West region, over 100 children are currently waiting for their forever homes, many of whom are under the age of two years.

Adoption West’s Open Day will open the door to what modern adoption looks like by offering attendees a short presentation, the opportunity to meet team members, and members of the local, thriving adoption community. Attendees will also learn about training and long-term adoption support, helping families thrive long after placement.

“If you’ve ever thought about adoption, even just once, this is your chance to find out more in a welcoming environment,” said Alison Lewis. “Adoption can be messy, joyful, challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Every child deserves the security of a place at the table, and that’s exactly what adoption gives them.”
