Existing Gipsy Patch Lane bridge

Roadworks are currently taking place on Gipsy Patch Lane in preparation for construction of the Cribbs Patchway metrobus extension (CPME) which is expected to start later this year.

The current work is being undertaken by BT to divert underground utilities and we would like to thank residents and the travelling public for their patience and understanding so far.

June 2019 closure
The next phase of BT’s preparatory work will require Gipsy Patch Lane to be closed to all vehicles at the railway bridge for approximately four weeks. The closure will begin on Monday 3 June.

The existing footway under the bridge will now be kept open for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists throughout the June closure and a signed diversion route via Bradley Stoke Way and the A38 will be in place.

Access to properties and side roads along Gipsy Patch Lane will be maintained and no disruption to the supply of utilities is expected. Businesses and shops along and near Gipsy Patch Lane will be open as normal.

Excavation work is necessary at the junction with Station Road. We currently anticipate that the junction will remain open, but with temporary traffic lights for a period during June.

In addition, ground investigations and surveys will be carried out near the bridge during late May and in June. This will include the removal of some vegetation on the railway embankments but will not require any further road closures.

Cabinet Member for Transport Cllr Steve Reade said: “We know this is a busy part of our road network and we are doing everything we can to reduce any disruption and delays. This includes holding a series of public drop-in sessions over the last couple of weeks to help keep residents informed and to explain more about the work.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the roadworks and would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding whilst this essential work takes place.”

Main Cribbs Patchway metrobus extension construction work
The utilities diversion work, including the June closure, is in preparation for the CPME construction work which will start later in 2019.

Working with Network Rail, the CPME scheme includes replacing the railway bridge over Gipsy Patch Lane with a wider bridge to enable both a general traffic and a bus lane in each direction as well as shared use cycle and pedestrian pathways. The scheme will also include footway widening and new bus lanes along other sections of Gipsy Patch Lane. This will result in significant benefits for all highway users, whether you travel by bus, car, cycle or on foot.

The construction work will include extensive traffic management, including an approximate eight month closure of Gipsy Patch Lane from early 2020 to enable the replacement of the railway bridge.
