sentence length

Keep sentences short (up to 25 words) and punctuation to a minimum. There is more advice on GOV.UK on writing short sentences.

SGC

Never use the abbreviation SGC or ‘South Glos’.

short URLs

Short, vanity or friendly URLs are redirects which signpost to a ‘full’ URL.

Short URLs are often created when needed for significant offline marketing and promotion where users are required to type them in.

slash

Do not use a ‘/’ but use ‘and’ or ‘or’ instead. For example parent or carer, not parent/carer.

south, the south of England

Lower case.

south-east, south-west

Lower case, hyphenated.

spaces

Use only one space after a full stop, not 2.

Do not add extra spaces or a return after a paragraph on a webpage as this will affect the html code.

steps

Use numbered steps instead of bullet points to guide a user through a process. You do not need a lead-in line and you can use links and downloads. Each step ends with a full stop because each step should be a complete sentence.
