Would you like to thank an unsung hero who helps make your community special? Nominations are now open for South Gloucestershire Council Chair’s Community Awards 2026.

The annual awards recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution that local, unpaid volunteers and community groups make to life in South Gloucestershire. The next celebration of community work and volunteering takes place in January, and you have until 5 December to nominate your local ‘community heroes’.

We’re looking for individuals or groups of unpaid volunteers whose efforts reflect our vision of a fairer, greener future for South Gloucestershire. The award categories include:

Climate and Nature Champions – for those protecting our environment, promoting sustainability, restoring nature, or helping communities adapt to climate change

Reducing Inequalities – for volunteers tackling poverty, improving access to services, supporting disadvantaged communities, or promoting equality and inclusion

Supporting Children and Young People – for those helping young people thrive through education, mentoring, youth activities, early years support, or working with vulnerable children

Wellbeing and Independence – for volunteers supporting older people, carers, those with disabilities, mental health initiatives, or helping people live independently

Building Better Communities – for those strengthening our towns and villages through community development, being a good neighbour, arts, sports, or bringing people together.

Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Katie Cooper said: “Do you know someone who gives their time freely to help others? Someone who is making a real difference in South Gloucestershire with their selfless work and dedication? Now is your chance to recognise their amazing contribution.

“These awards acknowledge the valuable contribution local volunteers make to life in South Gloucestershire. Our winners willingly give up their time to help others and bring our communities together – and they deserve to be celebrated. Don’t let their efforts go unrecognized – start thinking now about who you’d like to nominate!”
