Historic sites across South Gloucestershire will open their doors between 11-20 September for Heritage Open Days 2026, England’s largest festival of history and culture.
Heritage Open Days brings together thousands of organisations, events and volunteers from across the country each September, giving people the opportunity to explore local heritage, discover stories and celebrate the places that shape their communities.
The scheme provides free access to heritage sites and events, giving residents and visitors the chance to discover hidden treasures and enjoy unique experiences that form the history of South Gloucestershire, including its people and places.
This year’s theme is ‘Everyday Histories’ and explores local stories of working life, from learning skilled trades to the daily routines, traditions and ways of working that shaped people’s lives, offering a wide range of activities and attractions.
Visitors can explore exhibitions at Thornbury and District Museum, tour historic buildings including Thornbury Town Hall and The Chantry, climb the tower of St Mary’s Church in Thornbury, discover the history of Frenchay through guided walks and museum visits, and experience some of the area’s most significant industrial heritage sites, including Brandy Bottom Colliery, Ram Hill Colliery, Kingswood Heritage Museum and Warmley Signal Box.
There are also opportunities to visit historic churches, enjoy exhibitions and open days at venues including Horton Court, Winterbourne Medieval Barn, Yate Heritage Centre, Dyrham Park and William Champion’s Garden & Grotto. From the market town heritage of Thornbury and the rural landscapes around Horton and Dyrham, to the rich industrial history of Kingswood, Warmley and Coalpit Heath, the 2026 programme offers something for everyone.
