Hambrook - Whiteshill Common
On January 1st 1922 the War Memorial on the Whiteshill for the civil parish of Winterbourne was unveiled in a moving ceremony attended by the local community, some of whom had contributed to the commissioning of the construction of the memorial and had known those for whom it was placed.
It is large slightly tapered rectangular Latin Cross, with a pierced Iona head of pennant stone. It is inscribed on three sides with the names of those who fell from the three ecclesiastical parishes of Winterbourne, Frenchay and Winterbourne Down and has the dedication:
“Greater Love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
