South Gloucestershire Council supporting young people during Covid-19

South Gloucestershire Council has secured £40k of funding to help young people aged between 10 and 14 to stay active and occupied through the Covid-19 pandemic, while connecting them with local organisations that can support them during this difficult time.

Following a successful bid to the Youth Endowment Fund, we will be working with partners including local youth organisations and schools to provide activities in communities across South Gloucestershire.

The funding will enable us to offer young people opportunities for constructive activities with up to 40, six-week programmes being developed which could include sports programmes, bike maintenance, arts and music workshops.

The project will focus on areas of the district where there may be less on offer for young people with youth centres and schools not being available due to Covid-19 restrictions, and where anti-social behaviour might be an issue.

South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Sam Bromiley said: “I’m delighted that our bid to secure this funding has been approved so we can work alongside our partners within communities, to support young people. It has been an extremely difficult time for everyone, and with support networks at schools and local clubs not being as accessible as they normally would be due to social distancing measures, some young people may be vulnerable to increased levels of anxiety, isolation, poor mental health and exploitation.

“We see this funding as a really positive step forward to support young people by providing fun, rewarding and positive activities for them to take part in.”

The Youth Endowment Fund is an independent charitable trust set up by the Home Office. It funds, supports and evaluates projects in England and Wales which work to prevent children and young people from being drawn into violent crime.

Find out more about the current activities on offer to young people please on our Youth Activities Offer web page https://www.southglos.gov.uk/youthcentres
